Born and raised in Sayville, Long Island, New York, Virginia's artistic abilities started showing as soon as she could hold a pencil. She began studying art at age 6, after a kindergarten teacher confirmed to her mother that Virginia had an artistic gift. Private lessons continued during the formative years, winning a national art contest at age 10, doing commissions in her early teens, and showing her art in a local gallery at 16 years old. Attendance at Parson's School of Design in New York and graduation from the renowned Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, earned Virginia a degree in illustration.
After vacationing on Oahu, Hawaii in the winter of 1984, Virginia fell in love with the islands vibrant colors and positive energy. The artist returned to Hawaii shortly after telling her parents she left her soul there, and has basically been here ever since.
A partial list of the artist's clients have included the Bishop Museum, Hawaiian Airlines, Dole Plantation Gift Shop, Hale Koa Hotel, Marriott Beach Club Ko'olina, Island Heritage Publishing, and Hawaiian Resources Publishing.
On August 5, 2021, Virginia Bishop has released her first paperback and ebook on Amazon called " I Dream Of Mermaids"! It is a sweet story about an island girl named Kailea, who loves to dream about Christmas, cupcakes and purple kitties. Kailea's favorite dreams are of Mermaids. Art is healing to the mind, body, and spirit. "I hope you find my images appealing enough to decorate the walls of your home or office". Positive feedback to my work allows me to keep doing what I love most...creating art. The majority's response to Virginia's art is that it makes them smile...and that, the artist says, "is what it is all about".
The artist resides on the Leeward side of Oahu, Hawaii with her husband and son.
